Some lessons only reveal
themselves over a lifetime.

My life has taken me from a dairy farm in Ohio to Big Ten football. From seven seasons in the NFL to an entry-level sales job that eventually led to the CEO’s office. From what felt like a failed retirement to building a garden from scratch that’s now part of the Smithsonian—then writing a book about everything it taught me.

Looking back, those weren’t separate stories. They were different chapters of the same pursuit: understanding what produces outcomes and how to live with greater intention.

Everything you’ll find here grows from that lifelong pursuit

Three ways to explore the ideas that have
shaped every season of Chuck’s life

THE GARDEN

The garden that changed everything

What began as a failed retirement became one of the most meaningful seasons of Chuck’s life.

Over 14 years and more than 26,000 hours, Chuck built a garden from the ground up, one that is now part of the Smithsonian Archives of American Gardens. But the greatest thing that grew wasn’t flowers: it was perspective.

The garden became a teacher, reshaping how Chuck thinks about resilience, purpose, patience, and what it takes to really build something that lasts. Those lessons eventually became a memoir, Getting My Hands Dirty, and much of what he shares today.
