Life won’t always go according to plan.
But you can build a response to depend on when it doesn’t.
Sometimes life asks more of you than you expected: a new role, a difficult decision, a setback, or a change you didn’t see coming. Life doesn’t come with a playbook, and when something changes it can be difficult to know how to respond.
The Climb Journal is a guided personal-development practice that helps you slow down, reflect on what’s happening in your life, and better understand the patterns that shape your responses.
It’s a guided workbook for individuals who want to grow stronger through every season, not by finding a way to control what happens, but by becoming more intentional about how they react.
The Climb isn’t another book to finish. It’s an invitation to slow down and do the work.
Most personal growth content gives you something to read or listen to before moving on to the next big thing. The Climb asks you to stay with an idea longer.
Each lesson gives you a place to reflect on your own experiences, put your thoughts into words, and work through a practical exercise that helps you apply the idea to your personal circumstances. The Climb Journal is meant to be worked through one lesson at a time, with enough space in between to carry what you’re learning into your everyday life as you go.
The point isn’t to get to the last page and move on. It’s to understand yourself better than you did before.

What could change if you had a better understanding of yourself?
There are moments in life where change leaves you responding in ways you didn’t quite expect. Maybe you handle pressure differently than you thought you would, or find yourself falling into patterns you’ve seen before, but never really stopped to understand. Sometimes the hardest part isn’t knowing what to do next; it’s taking a deep look at how you’re responding in the first place.
Taking the time to look more closely at those moments changes the way you move through them. You begin to recognize the patterns that have been there all along, understand what matters to you, and make choices with a little more intention, rather than simply reacting to what the moment asks of you.
In The Climb, we call that building your standard. The goal isn’t fixing yourself or becoming someone different. It’s about creating the space to pay attention to your experiences, your reactions, and the standard that continues to hold up through the changing seasons of your life.
A Practice for the Seasons That Make You Stop and Think
The big questions don’t come up when everything is going according to plan. They hit you when something changes or shakes you up: a promotion, a setback, a leadership opportunity, retirement, or a new chapter that looks a little different than what you expected.
Those moments can leave you searching for something to hold on to, even if you can’t quite place what that something is.
The Climb Journal starts with a simple belief: we can’t intentionally influence what we don’t first understand. Instead of rushing toward an answer, it invites you to pay closer attention.
Your experiences are the starting point.
Chuck Hutchison has spent more than seven decades moving through very different seasons of life: from a rural dairy farm, to Ohio State’s National Championship football team, seven seasons in the NFL, executive leadership, and a Smithsonian-featured garden he built after retirement.
While each chapter and circumstance was different, Chuck noticed the behaviors that remained remarkably consistent. The Climb emerged from that observation.
The Climb Journal doesn’t ask you to copy Chuck’s experiences. It gives you an opportunity to pay attention to your own, noticing what you repeat, what holds up when everything changes, and what you wish to carry with you into what comes next.
Why put the work on paper?
Some things are worth slowing down for. Writing by hand takes longer than typing, and that’s part of the point. It gives you more time to stick with a thought, put an experience into your own words, and notice something you might otherwise move right past.
The paper is part of the practice. Because what you write is yours, the journal becomes something you can return to in the future. You may even be surprised at what holds true through the years.
You don’t need another answer, but you may need better questions.
What keeps showing up in your life? What do you tend to do when circumstances change? What have you learned from the seasons that didn’t go according to plan? What holds up when everything else changes?
What keeps showing up in your life? What do you tend to do when circumstances change? What have you learned from the seasons that didn’t go according to plan? What holds up when everything else changes?
The Climb isn’t a formula for getting life right.
It doesn’t promise that uncertainty will disappear.
It invites curiosity.
Some questions are worth slowing down for.
